OB-GYN Services
Homer Medical Center offers a full range of gynecology services. Our board certified physician provides expertise in all aspects of gynecologic care, including contraception, abnormal menstruation, pelvic pain, menopause and cancer screening. We offer comprehensive services including:
- Surveillance and treatment of abnormal pap smears

- Permanent sterilization with hysteroscopic Essure and laparoscopic tubal ligation

Homer Medical Center offers Obstetric services. Our physician provides consultation and support to the West Wing midwifery program for high risk pregnancies including vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Our services include:
- Version for breech presentation
- Repeat and primary cesarean delivery
- VBAC consultation
- Postpartum tubal ligation
- Immediate postpartum IUD insertion

Homer Medical Center Midwifery Service at the West Wing
The Certified Nurse Midwives are also licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. This allows them to provide full scope woman’s care including; Wellness Visits, family planning and contraception, preconception counseling, care throughout pregnancy teaming with our OB-GYN, birthing classes, delivery, after delivery care, lactation consulting and Well Baby check ups through 3 years old.

Prenatal Care:
Our Certified Nurse Midwives provide routine prenatal care throughout pregnancy. We usually start care around 10 weeks and follow a regular schedule. Our first visit will start with confirmation of pregnancy, a review of history, complete physical exam and answer any questions. We always schedule time in for education as well as providing no cost childbirth and breastfeeding classes for our clients and their families. We work closely with our OB-GYN with referrals and planning. We welcome all Medicaid (Denali Care), private insurers, Tricare and private pay. We can work with Medicaid to arrange travel and housing as needed. We can provide referrals to Providence Hospital, ANMC, Alaska Regional and any specialists.
Birth:
The Nurse Midwives attend normal, low risk, family-centered births at the beautiful birthing center at South Peninsula Hospital. There is always Family Physician backup available if any complications arise. The family physicians in our service have a special interest and training in obstetrics. The SPH birth center offers 3 large private birth rooms and a separate tub room, a family waiting room and nearby surgical and anesthesia services. The professional staff offers individual support, specialized comfort techniques and security for the whole family. If complications arise that preclude delivery at SPH we will help to make to transfer process as smooth as possible. We are a small community hospital and have no intensive care facilities for obstetrical or neonatal complications.
Well Woman Services:
The Certified Nurse Midwives offer a full array of women’s services including full Wellness Exams (including Kenai Peninsula Borough physicals), pap smears, and clinical breast exams. We can order; labs, mammograms, bone density screens as well as a variety of other screenings and referrals. We are able to provide contraceptive and STD services as well. We offer Oral contraceptives, Nuva Ring, Ortho Evra, Depo Provera (injection), Nexplanon and all 3 types of IUD as well as sterilization referrals. We are happy to assist with menopausal and infertility issues.
